2008 Science Fair
Ninety-three projects competed for ribbons and special prizes at this year's Intel-affiliated Contra Costa Science & Engineering Fair held April 3, 4 & 5, 2008 at Heald Conference Center in Concord. Over one hundred 7th through 12th graders from 13 middle and high schools in Contra Costa were on hand for this second-year event.

Only Senior Division winners went on to international competition in Atlanta, Georgia in May. Several of the fair's first place winners also went on to compete in the California State Science Fair also scheduled in May.

The Contra Costa Science Fair confers Special Awards to outstanding projects which are determined by specific companies or industry associations across the country. Locally, students received some outstanding honors from such organizations as Bio-Rad Laboratories, John Muir Health, Mirant, Society of Petroleum Engineers—Golden Gate Sector, and Northern California Chapter of the American Vacuum Society.

About the Intel-affiliated Contra Costa Science Fair:

Contra Costa businesses joined with K-12 educators to establish an Intel-affiliated Science & Engineering Fair in Contra Costa County in 2006. It was a great success and we have scheduled the fourth annual event on March 19, 20 & 21, 2009 at Heald Conference Center in Concord.

Before 2006, Contra Costa students interested in competing in the International Science & Engineering Fair were required to compete in the Intel-affiliated San Francisco Bay Area fair.

An Intel ISEF-affiliated science fair is a science competition that is a member of the Intel ISEF network. These competitions exist in every state in the U.S. and 40 countries. All Intel ISEF-affiliated science fairs register with Science Service and must consist of five participating high schools or 50 students in the 7th-12th grades.

Fairs are conducted at local, regional, state and national levels. The winners of the Contra Costa Science & Engineering Fair (CCSEF) go on to compete in the International Science & Engineering Fair each spring. In 2009, the International Fair will be held in Reno, Nevada on May 8-15.

A limited number of student winners may also be asked to participate in the California State Science Fair competition set for May 18 & 19 in Southern California..
